For a solo traveller or a couple staying mostly around Stone Town and a single beach base, an economy car like the Toyota Vitz or Toyota Axio is usually the smartest choice. Both are easy to park in tight Stone Town streets, comfortable for two with luggage, and noticeably cheaper per day — money better spent on a sunset dhow cruise or a spice tour. The Vitz suits a tighter budget and shorter stays; the Axio’s larger boot is worth the small step up if you’re relocating between hotels partway through your trip.

If your plan includes beach hotels down sandy access roads, or you simply want more reassurance on rougher stretches, step up to an SUV. The Toyota RAV4 is our best all-rounder: enough ground clearance for sandy tracks, comfortable for up to five, and reasonably priced. The Suzuki Jimny is a fun, compact alternative if there are only two of you and you want something nimble rather than spacious. For bigger groups or families needing serious capability and space, the Toyota Prado TX seats seven with real luggage room, and its diesel engine handles longer full-island days without a fuel stop mid-trip.

Travelling as a large group, wedding party, or multi-family holiday? The Toyota Hiace is the obvious choice — 14 seats means everyone travels together instead of splitting into two or three cars, which matters more than you’d think when you’re trying to coordinate a group day trip to Jozani Forest or a joint airport transfer.

A few other things worth factoring into your choice:
