Nungwi Beach: Zanzibar’s Sunset Capital

If you only self-drive to one beach town during your stay, most repeat visitors will tell you to make it Nungwi. Sitting right at Zanzibar’s northern tip, roughly a 45-60 minute drive from Stone Town depending on traffic, Nungwi combines wide white-sand beaches, some of the calmest swimming water on the island, and a genuinely lively evening scene that beach towns further south don’t quite match.

The geography is what makes it special: because Nungwi sits at the very top of the island, it largely escapes the tidal swings that empty the shoreline at low tide elsewhere in Zanzibar. That means swimmable water at almost any hour, which is a real advantage if you’re travelling with kids or simply don’t want to plan your beach day around a tide table.

A few things worth building into your visit:

– Sunset dhow cruises. Traditional wooden sailing dhows leave most evenings for a one to two hour sail along the coast, timed to be on the water as the sun goes down — genuinely one of the best-value experiences on the island.
– The Mnarani Aquarium, a small marine conservation pool where green sea turtles recovering from injury are cared for before release, right on the beach.
– Kendwa, a short drive or beach walk further along the coast, worth combining with Nungwi if you have a full day.

Driving to Nungwi is straightforward — the main road north from Stone Town is sealed and in decent condition, though it narrows and gets busier as you approach the town itself, with motorbikes, bicycles and pedestrians sharing the same stretch of road. Give yourself extra time in the last few kilometres, and note that many hotels are set back from the main road down sandy access tracks, where a higher-clearance vehicle like our RAV4 or Prado TX earns its keep.

Parking in Nungwi itself is informal but generally easy near most hotels and restaurants. If your accommodation is directly on the beach, ask about secure overnight parking when you book — most places have an arrangement, even if it’s just a gated yard.

Whichever car you choose from the Hamid Car Rentals fleet, plan on spending at least one full day and evening in Nungwi. It’s a long way to drive for just a lunch stop.
