Kiwengwa Puts You in the Middle of the East Coast

Some Zanzibar destinations are interesting because they sit at the end of a journey. Kiwengwa is useful for almost the opposite reason. It can work as a base between journeys.

Look north and you can build a day toward Matemwe and North-East Zanzibar. Look south and the coast eventually leads toward Paje and the south-east. Head inland and your itinerary can shift toward Stone Town, Jozani or another part of the island.

That gives Kiwengwa a useful role in a self-drive Zanzibar trip. You are not choosing only a beach. You are choosing a base from which several different Zanzibar days become possible.

Why Explore Kiwengwa by Car?

If your holiday is designed entirely around your accommodation, a car may not be necessary every day. But if you want to experience more of the island, Kiwengwa’s position becomes valuable.

With independent transport, you can build days around Matemwe, North-East Zanzibar, Paje, South-East Zanzibar, Jozani, Stone Town and other east-coast areas. Instead of arranging a transfer every time you leave the hotel, you decide where the day goes.

First: Give Kiwengwa Its Own Time

Do not make the mistake of choosing Kiwengwa as a base and then immediately spending every day somewhere else. Stay. Enjoy the coast. Walk. Have lunch. Rest. Spend time near the ocean.

As with much of Zanzibar’s east-facing coastline, the beach experience changes with the tides. That creates a natural travel rhythm — some parts of the day belong to the coast, others can become opportunities to explore.

Roadbook Tip: your itinerary does not need to fight the island’s rhythm. Let the day decide when you stay and when you drive.

The East Coast Driving Corridor

This is where Kiwengwa becomes particularly interesting. Think of Zanzibar’s east coast as a journey rather than a collection of unrelated beaches.

1Matemwe

2Kiwengwa

3Michamvi / Central-East

4Paje

5Jambiani

6South Zanzibar

You do not need to drive the entire corridor in one day — that would miss the point. Instead, use different sections for different days.

Drive North: Kiwengwa to Matemwe

If you want a quieter coastal experience, head north toward Matemwe. The journey gives you a chance to experience another part of Zanzibar’s north-east.

A relaxed day can be: Kiwengwa, a coastal journey, Matemwe, then lunch, beach or a slow afternoon before you return. Read the Matemwe by Car guide for more on what to do once you arrive.

Drive South: Kiwengwa to Paje

Another day can move in the opposite direction — Kiwengwa, an east-coast journey, then Paje. The atmosphere changes as you move toward one of Zanzibar’s best-known south-east visitor hubs.

Paje is particularly useful if you want a more active visitor scene, a kitesurfing atmosphere, cafes and restaurants, access toward Jambiani, or a starting point for South Zanzibar. Read the Paje by Car guide for more on that side of the coast.

Drive Inland: Kiwengwa to Stone Town

Not every day needs to stay near the ocean. One of the strongest contrasts from Kiwengwa is Stone Town. Leave the east coast, cross into a different Zanzibar environment, and arrive in Zanzibar City.

Park appropriately, then explore the historic core on foot. See the Stone Town by Car guide for how to spend your time there.

Kiwengwa to Jozani

Another way to break the beach routine is to build a nature day: Kiwengwa, an inland journey, Jozani, then an optional continuation toward the south-east, before you return or continue on. This works particularly well if Jozani is part of a larger route rather than an isolated return transfer. See the Jozani & South Zanzibar by Car guide.

North Today. South Tomorrow.

This is the central idea of staying in Kiwengwa with a car. You do not need to choose one side of the east coast. For example:

Monday — stay in Kiwengwa.
Tuesday — drive north toward Matemwe.
Wednesday — stay local.
Thursday — drive south toward Paje.
Friday — Stone Town.

One accommodation. Several versions of Zanzibar.

Kiwengwa or Matemwe?

These destinations can appeal to slightly different travellers.

Kiwengwa may suit you if: you want a central east-coast base, you expect to explore both north and south, you want beach time plus road trips, and your wider itinerary matters as much as the immediate destination.

Matemwe may suit you if: you want a more north-east-oriented stay, a quieter coastal base is a priority, and you expect to spend more time exploring North Zanzibar.

With a car, the distinction becomes less restrictive — stay where the accommodation and atmosphere suit you, and explore the other during your trip. Read the Matemwe by Car guide for more on that side of the coast.

Kiwengwa or Paje?

This is a more significant choice.

Kiwengwa — central east coast, useful for north/south exploration, can work well as a more balanced island base.

Paje — south-east Zanzibar, a more established kitesurfing identity, useful for Jambiani, Jozani and South Zanzibar, a more active visitor atmosphere.

Choose according to the kind of trip you want, or divide your stay — Kiwengwa for several nights, then Paje for several nights, then South Zanzibar. Read the Paje by Car guide for more on the south-east.

Kiwengwa for Couples

Couples can use Kiwengwa as a base that balances beach days and exploration. A simple trip might include a quiet morning, a drive somewhere new, lunch, exploring, then a return to the coast. Or simply breakfast, beach, and nothing else. The value is having both options.

Kiwengwa for Families

Families may appreciate staying in one place while taking day trips rather than repeatedly moving hotels. When choosing your vehicle, consider passenger count, luggage, child-seat requirements, comfort, beach equipment and how often you expect longer drives. A larger vehicle is not automatically better — choose what fits the actual group.

Kiwengwa for Longer Stays

The location becomes especially useful during a longer Zanzibar holiday. A seven-day stay does not need seven organised excursions. You can alternate local days, north-east drives, south-east drives, Stone Town, nature, restaurants elsewhere and complete rest days. That gives your trip variety without constant relocation.

A 3-Day Kiwengwa Base

Day 1 — Kiwengwa. Beach. Rest. Explore locally. No major drive.
Day 2 — North-East. Kiwengwa → Matemwe → optional additional north-east stop → Kiwengwa.
Day 3 — South-East. Kiwengwa → Paje → return.

Three different days. One east-coast base.

A 5-Day Kiwengwa Base

Day 1 — Kiwengwa.
Day 2 — Matemwe / North-East Zanzibar.
Day 3 — stay local.
Day 4 — Paje / South-East Zanzibar.
Day 5 — Stone Town or Jozani.

Use this as inspiration, not a fixed schedule.

A Full East Coast Road Trip

For travellers who want a bigger journey, Kiwengwa can form part of a multi-stop route: Matemwe, then Kiwengwa, then Paje, then Jambiani, then South Zanzibar. This should not be completed as a rushed single-day trip — instead, it can become a multi-day east-coast itinerary, using the individual guides above for each stop along the way.

Practical Driving Tips Around Kiwengwa

Confirm your accommodation access. Ask your accommodation for current arrival and parking instructions — don’t assume a navigation pin represents the best vehicle entrance.

Treat maps as guidance. Navigation apps are useful but not infallible. Follow current signs and local guidance if digital directions appear unsuitable.

Slow down through communities. Watch for pedestrians, children, bicycles, animals and local traffic. A road trip passes through people’s everyday environments — drive accordingly.

Don’t try to cover the entire east coast in one day. The goal is not to say you visited every beach. Choose one direction, explore properly, and come back another day.

Plan unfamiliar longer drives conservatively. Daylight can make unfamiliar routes easier to understand. When driving after dark, reduce speed and adjust to visibility and current conditions — see our general driving guide.
