Why Paje Works So Well as a Zanzibar Base

Some destinations are places you visit. Others work better as a base from which to explore. Paje can do both.

Located on Zanzibar’s east coast, Paje is known for its long beach, kitesurfing scene and relaxed coastal atmosphere. You can spend an entire day near the ocean without needing to go anywhere.

But if you have a car, Paje becomes something more useful: a starting point for exploring a much larger part of Zanzibar. Jambiani lies further along the southeast coast. Jozani offers a completely different inland experience. Michamvi opens another part of the east coast. And travelling south introduces quieter areas of the island.

Instead of booking separate transfers whenever you want to leave Paje, having your own car lets you decide each morning what kind of Zanzibar day you want.

Do You Need a Car in Paje?

If your plan is simply hotel → beach → restaurant → hotel, then probably not. Much of the immediate Paje experience can be enjoyed without driving everywhere.

But a car changes what you can easily do from Paje. It becomes useful when your itinerary starts to include:

  • Jambiani
  • Jozani
  • Michamvi
  • South Zanzibar
  • Stone Town
  • other beaches
  • restaurants outside Paje
  • several destinations in one day

The question therefore is not “Do I need a car to visit Paje?” A better question is: “How much of Zanzibar do I want to explore while staying in Paje?”

Paje Itself

Before turning every day into a road trip, give Paje time. The beach is a major part of the experience here. The east coast is also strongly influenced by the tides, so the appearance and experience of the shoreline can change significantly during the day.

Paje is particularly well known among travellers interested in kitesurfing, but you do not need to be a kitesurfer to enjoy staying here. The area also has cafés, restaurants, accommodation and a social atmosphere that makes it easy to spend a slower day without getting into the car at all.

Roadbook Tip: Some days you explore. Some days you don’t. Having a car simply gives you the choice.

Your East Coast Starts Here

Instead of thinking about Paje as one isolated destination, look at the wider coast. A stay here can connect naturally with Paje → Jambiani → Jozani → Michamvi → South Zanzibar.

You do not need to visit all of them in one day — in fact, you probably shouldn’t. The advantage of staying in Paje with a car is that you can divide the area into relaxed day trips.

1. Drive South to Jambiani

One of the easiest additions to a Paje stay is Jambiani. The two destinations are often mentioned together, but their atmosphere is not identical. Paje has developed a strong visitor and kitesurfing scene, while Jambiani retains a more village-oriented coastal character alongside tourism. Rather than deciding which one deserves your entire holiday, explore both.

A simple Paje + Jambiani day: spend the morning in Paje without rushing, drive toward Jambiani late morning, explore the area and stop for lunch at midday, spend more time along the southeast coast in the afternoon, then return to Paje or stay in Jambiani for dinner. Keep the schedule flexible — the point is not to race through two destinations, it is to have the freedom to move between them.

2. Trade the Beach for Jozani

One of the best reasons to keep a car while staying in Paje is that your day does not have to be entirely coastal. Jozani offers a very different environment from the beaches of the east coast, which makes it a natural addition to a Paje itinerary.

A Paje → Jozani → South Zanzibar route: start by the ocean, spend part of the day inland, continue exploring, then return to the coast later. This kind of contrast is what makes self-directed travel around Zanzibar interesting.

3. Explore Towards Michamvi

Another direction from Paje takes you toward Michamvi and a different section of Zanzibar’s east coast. This works particularly well for travellers who enjoy slow coastal drives, changing beaches, lunch stops, discovering quieter areas, and leaving the main tourist base for part of the day.

Do not treat every road trip as a mission to visit as many attractions as possible. Sometimes the better experience is simply: drive, lunch, beach, sunset, return.

4. Go South

Travelling south from the Paje/Jambiani area can introduce a quieter side of Zanzibar. This is where having your own transport becomes particularly useful — instead of booking a return trip to one attraction, you can build several experiences into a single journey. For example: Paje → Jambiani → South Zanzibar → Kizimkazi area → return, or Paje → Jozani → South Coast → return.

Do not attempt to squeeze every southern destination into one day. Choose a route that leaves time to actually experience the places you visit.

Beyond Paje: A One-Day East Coast Road Trip

A relaxed east-coast day built around Paje could look something like this:

Morning — Paje

Start slowly. Breakfast, beach or a walk before leaving.

Late Morning — Jambiani

Move south and experience a different coastal atmosphere.

Afternoon — Explore

Choose one direction depending on your interests: Jozani, for nature and an inland change of scenery; continue exploring the southeast; or return north and explore another part of the east coast.

Evening

Return to Paje. Have dinner. Leave the car parked. Enjoy the evening.

Paje for Kitesurfers

Paje is strongly associated with kitesurfing. If kitesurfing is one of the reasons you are staying here, having a car can be useful for another reason: your entire Zanzibar trip does not need to revolve around one beach. You can spend time on the water when conditions suit your plans, then use the rest of your stay to explore elsewhere.

If travelling with equipment, choose a vehicle based on your actual luggage and equipment requirements rather than simply choosing the cheapest option — confirm cabin and boot space against the vehicle’s own specifications before you book.

Paje for Couples

Paje works well for couples who want both beach time and independent exploration. One day can be intentionally slow. The next can become a road trip. A possible stay might include Paje on day one, Jambiani on day two, Jozani plus another stop on day three, no driving on day four, and Michamvi or the east coast on day five. This flexibility can make a longer beach stay feel much less repetitive.

Paje for Families

Families may appreciate Paje because it can work as a fixed accommodation base while allowing day trips elsewhere. Instead of changing hotels frequently, you can return to the same accommodation after exploring.

When choosing a car, consider:

  • Number of passengers
  • Luggage
  • Child-seat requirements
  • Beach equipment
  • Comfort for longer drives
  • How often you expect to explore

What Car Is Best for Paje?

There is no single correct answer. It depends on what you plan to do outside Paje.

Economy Car

Consider an economy car if you are travelling as a couple, luggage is limited, most days will remain around Paje, or you only expect occasional island trips.

SUV

Consider an SUV if you want additional cabin or luggage space, you plan several day trips, you are travelling with a small family, or you prefer a larger vehicle.

Family / Group Vehicle

Consider a larger vehicle if several adults are travelling together, you have substantial luggage, you need more passenger space, or your trip involves airport transfers plus longer island travel.

Choose based on your passengers, luggage and how much of Zanzibar you plan to explore.

Paje or Jambiani?

This is worth understanding before choosing accommodation. Both are on Zanzibar’s southeast coast, but visitors may prefer them for different reasons.

Paje may suit you if: you want a more active visitor scene, kitesurfing is important to your trip, you like having cafés, restaurants and social options nearby, or you want a convenient base for exploring.

Jambiani may suit you if: you prefer a slower coastal environment, a village-oriented atmosphere appeals to you, or you still want easy access to Paje.

If you have a car, you do not necessarily need to make this a difficult decision — stay in whichever suits your accommodation preference and explore the other.

Paje or Nungwi?

This is the bigger Zanzibar question. They are not interchangeable. Nungwi represents a northern Zanzibar beach experience. Paje gives you an east-coast base with easy access to the southeast and inland destinations.

Instead of asking “Which one is better?”, ask “Which experience fits this part of my trip?” If you have enough time, consider including both — a rental car makes the journey between the two part of your Zanzibar itinerary rather than simply another transfer. Read the full Nungwi by Car guide to compare.

Paje + Stone Town

Beach and historic Zanzibar work well together. A common mistake is to stay on the coast for the entire holiday and visit Stone Town only as a rushed transfer-day stop. Consider giving it proper time instead: drive from Paje to Stone Town, explore on foot, have dinner by the waterfront, then return or stay overnight.

Remember that the historic core of Stone Town is primarily a walking experience. The car gets you there — your feet do the exploring.

Practical Driving Tips Around Paje

Don’t rush. Village activity, local traffic and changing road conditions mean journeys should include flexibility. Do not plan your day around unrealistically precise arrival times.

Use maps as a guide, not absolute truth. Navigation apps are useful, but accommodation entrances, local access roads and road conditions can change. Follow specific instructions from your hotel or destination when available.

Roadbook Tip: Confirm parking with your accommodation before you arrive. If staying in Paje, ask where they prefer guests to leave vehicles.

Be more conservative after dark. If you are unfamiliar with local roads, longer exploratory drives are generally easier to understand during daylight. If driving after dark, reduce speed and drive according to visibility and conditions — see our general driving guide.

Keep your plans flexible. The biggest advantage of having your own car is flexibility. Do not recreate the rigidity of a guided transfer schedule yourself — if you find somewhere you enjoy, stay longer.

A Multi-Day Paje Base Itinerary

This is not a strict schedule — it is a starting point.

A 3-Day Idea

Day 1: arrive, leave the car parked, explore Paje, beach, dinner. Day 2: Paje → Jambiani → explore further south if desired → return to Paje. Day 3: Paje → Jozani → additional stop depending on time → return to the east coast.

A 5-Day Idea

Day 1: Paje. Day 2: Jambiani + southeast. Day 3: Jozani + South Zanzibar. Day 4: no road trip, enjoy the beach. Day 5: Michamvi or another east-coast drive.

The purpose of a car is not to spend every day driving. It is to have options.

Can I visit Paje and Jambiani together?

Yes, they can naturally form part of the same southeast Zanzibar itinerary. Avoid treating both as quick photo stops; leave enough time to experience each area.

Can I stay in Paje and explore Zanzibar by car?

Yes. Paje can work as a base for several day trips, particularly around the east and southeast. How far you should travel in one day depends on your itinerary and how much time you want to spend at each destination.

They provide different coastal experiences. Paje is on the east coast and is particularly associated with kitesurfing and access to the southeast. Nungwi is in northern Zanzibar and offers a different beach and tourism environment. Travellers with enough time can include both.

What car should I rent for Paje?
